Lida

The city was founded in 1323 as a grand ducal property. In the 1330s, the first stone castle on the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was built from fieldstone and brick by order of Grand Duke Gediminas. The castle suffered significant damage during the war with Muscovy in 1654-1667 and during the Northern War. The castle was built using a type of defensive structure – a castellan. The building stands on an artificial mound a hundred meters high. Today Lida Castle has been significantly renovated, and restoration work is still underway.
