This defensive structure in the form of an earthen rampart was erected by Russian troops after the capture of the city during the Livonian War. But the rampart did not bring much benefit, since fifteen years later the city was liberated by the troops of Stefan Batory. Today, the city stadium is located behind the rampart, where a composition of gold products from the 9th century was found in the 1980s.
