Stone Cross (Stone G131⟫)

This stone cross is installed next to the cemetery, near the road leading to the village of Izha, by a huge pine tree on an artificial hill. The beautiful proportions of this worship cross are visible from afar. According to local legend, it is set on the site of the last meeting of a young nobleman with a beautiful peasant woman, who, according to the will of the owner of the local estate, the father of this guy, had to move with his parents to another place of residence. The cross was unsuccessfully "privatized" by the Orthodox Church.

Not far from the village of Ilya, Myadel district, in the village of Mostoviki, or rather, one and a half kilometers from the village on the way to the village of Starye Gaby, we can see the picturesque ruins of an unnamed stone Orthodox church. This stone cross is located behind the apse of the church. It seems that it did not originally stand here, but was moved to the walls of the temple from another place. Although, perhaps, it was simply moved from the place where it used to stand as a tombstone cross.

A stone cross stands at the edge of the road under an old lime tree, not far from the village, behind a railway crossing. Inscriptions and illegible symbols are visible on the surface of the cross. Perhaps this cross was cut from a pagan idol, which were mostly images of women. There are gifts at the cross: money, sweets, an embroidered towel and armfuls of artificial flowers.

Not far from the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, which was erected here in 1894, a small stone cross of regular shape has been preserved in the cemetery. This miracle of human handiwork is carved from a single block of stone using the simplest tools.

There are all kinds of things on this hill! There's a Jewish cemetery, an Orthodox cemetery, a Catholic cemetery, and World War II graves. There are also stone crosses here. Embossed inscriptions and dates have been preserved on individual crosses. If you look closely, you can even see the names. There is a cross made of dark red material, most likely granite. Many crosses, having fallen to the ground, eventually disappear under the layer of earth.

The first cross is said to be one of the oldest stone crosses. It is located in the museum of stones in the Uruchye neighborhood. The second cross is completely unique and clearly cut from a pagan idol (mother and child). It is located in the building of the Scientific Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The old cemetery is badly neglected, which gives them a mysterious look.

If you stand with your back to the exit from the village, then if you walk through a spacious field, about two kilometers from the village itself, you can find this unique place deep in the forest. We will walk along a barely noticeable path into a clean young pine forest. Among the colorful mosses and small forest vegetation in the form of blueberry bushes and small ferns, we will see a whole collection of stone crosses of different shapes and colors. Many crosses are slowly "disappearing", and the place is being destroyed by heavy machinery.

On the outskirts of the village, literally by the road leading to it, there is an old cemetery. Judging by the dates stamped on their tombstones, burials have been held here since the middle of the 19th century, and stone crosses standing in the cemetery indicate that this churchyard is much older. The symbols on the crosses were eventually broken.

In the ancient cemetery of the village, there are many stone crosses and slabs with inscriptions in the Old Belarusian language dating back to the 13th century. Many crosses gradually sink into the ground.

Near the village, in the old Christian cemetery, around 1858, a Catholic chapel in the eclectic style was erected from rubble stone and brick. According to legend, this religious building was built as a chapel-tomb of the owners of the nearest estate. Later, the chapel was consecrated, most likely in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The settlement of Kovby has been known since the 15th century. It is located very close to the River Steer. The local estate belonged to the Kolb-Seletsky family. There is a small chapel in the neoclassical style, built of brick at the end of the XVIII century. In 1916, Alexander Blok lived in Kovby for a while. He sketched this chapel in a letter to his wife, who lived in Petrograd.

On the edge of the village, on a gentle slope, there are ancient cemeteries. You need to cross the dried-up streambed and climb higher up the slope to see the chapel. It was built at the end of the XVIII century. of brick in the Gothic Revival style and is in a dilapidated condition. If you go deep into the cemetery, not far from the apse of the chapel you can see a stone cross, recently dug out of the ground for unknown reasons.

In the ancient cemetery you can see two religious buildings made of wood in the style of folk architecture. The Church of the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord was built in 1943. The temple is decorated with a three-tiered bell tower with elegant proportions. There is a chapel of very interesting construction next to the church. It was built in the early 19th century, presumably in 1833.

Since the middle of the 14th century. as part of the INCL. The settlement was famous for talented craftsmen who made ceramic items from the unique Kopyss clay. The Transfiguration Church has been rebuilt beyond recognition. The original brick triple gate (19th century) and an ancient stone cross have been preserved next to it. There is also a former Catholic chapel (18th century), next to which there is another cross, and a small two-storey stone house (1890).

The chapel was built in the ancient Catholic cemetery of brick in the Baroque style in 1829 by Mikhail Tyshkevich after the death of Count Joseph Tyshkevich as a chapel at the Volozhinsky Church. After the uprising of 1863-1864, it was transferred to the Orthodox Church, and in 1923 it was returned to the Catholics. After the Second World War, the chapel was in disrepair for a long time. Today it is being rebuilt as an Orthodox chapel with onion domes.
